Charles Burt MECUM was born on AUG 25 1822 in West Suffield, CT. He died on FEB 21 1905 in Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., IA. He was buried in Jefferson, Greene Co., Iowa. He was also one of the Jayhawkers. Sometimes his last name wa s spelled Meachum. He was one of nine children. He settled in G alesburg in 1844. Over the winter of 1848/9 he decided to go t o California to wash gold. Charles remained in California for fi ve years. He returned to Illinois where he married and moved t o Woodhull.
He is found in the 1870 Illinois census, Knox county, Ontario to wnship. He is age 45 and born in Massachusetts and is a farmer . He lives next door to his wife's brother Luther who was a fel low Jayhawker. In about 1895, the family moved on to Rippey, Gre ene county, Iowa and that was the family farm until 1905.
His family history comes from a book called the Jayhawkers of De ath Valley by John G. Ellenbacker. His obituary is found in th e Galesburg paper 27 February 1905 "Mecum, Charles H. died in Mo unt Union, Iowa, one of the best known of the Knox county pionee rs and member of the famous Jayhawkers. A letter from his wido w to Colonel John B. Colton of Kansas City, also one of the Jayh awkers and a very metriculous keeper of the records and tireles s in preserving all records of the famous trip, (coralating dat e 21 February, following information the death of her husband ) He passed away 26 February. He was dying all day and unconcio us. It was not La Grippe alone but he had kidney disease and ot her troubles incurable. He did not want to live on account of t hese troubles. A few days before his death Colonel Colton had g one to his home in company with Mr. Mecum and had celebrated th e Jayhawker's anniversary. He saw however, Mr. Mecum was not ro bust. Colonel Colton is the last of the survivors east of Sierr a Nevada. The membership trip made in 1849 permitted an everlas ting friendship.

The Monmouth Review of 4 July 1917 announces the death of F.R. M ecum, he died at home on his farm where he was born. His funera l was conducted by Reverend N.T. Allen of Galesburg and burial w as in the Linwood cemetery.
